“My grandfather, Edward Derry, loved Menlo Park and taught me and my family the importance of balancing the needs of our community while preserving and protecting its unique character and beauty.”

-Blake Derry

On September 12th the Menlo Park City Council approved the Derry Project – concluding a comprehensive three year planning and public review process.   That same day, five residents announced their intention to overturn the project approval by referendum – petitions are now being circulated.

The Derry Project Description
Unlike many issues which have divided the City Council, the Derry Project won support and praise from both sides because it is an intelligent, high quality design, locally owned, that provides tremendous public benefits – a mixed-use community everyone can be proud of.

  • 135 one and two bedroom condominium homes – putting the dream of home ownership in reach for many Menlo Park residents.
  • 21 homes designated as affordable housing.
  • 22,500 square feet of commercial space.
  • Attractive new retail and restaurant space; and a generous public plaza fronting onto Oak Grove Avenue across from Crepes Café and Gambardella’s.
  • The site, just north of the train station adjacent to downtown, is currently in a half vacant, run-down condition not in keeping with Menlo Park.

Community Benefits
New Revenue to Help Balance the City Budget:
$5.7 million to fund police and fire protection, schools and parks.
A significant, reliable long-term revenue stream for our city.

Affordable Housing:
21 below market condominium homes for qualified Menlo Park residents.  There are currently 500 families on the waiting list.

Reduced Traffic:
New housing downtown, adjacent to the train station and public transportation along El Camino is the kind of redevelopment that encourages use of mass transit .
